The biggest names in retail can be found at Union Square. Virtually every fashion label in the world has set up shop in and around Square, a landmark park in the heart of the downtown shopping and hotel district.

Crossing the strait of the Golden Gate from San Francisco to the Marin headlands for 1.7 miles is the world-renowned Golden Gate Bridge, Take a walk across it - well over a mile - and enjoy a gull’s eye view of the shipping traffic passing far below. Visit Golden Gate Park, over 1000 acres of lawns, lakes and a riot of flora.

Take a ride on one of the famous cable cars in San Francisco. With over 50 hills in the city to climb, you will not only delight in the experience but appreciate the ride. Nob Hill boasts perhaps the best view of San Francisco Bay. See also Lombard street, known as the crookedest street in the world.

One of the most photographed locations in San Francisco, Alamo Square's famous "postcard row" at Hayes and Steiner Streets is indeed a visual treat. A tight, escalating formation of Victorian houses is back-dropped by downtown skyscrapers, providing a stunning contrast.

Step through Dragon’s Gate and find yourself in a totally different world. Welcome to China Town. Stroll through the 24 blocks of hustle and bustle with exotic shops, food markets, temples and museums. Buy herbal remedies, enjoy samples at a tea bar and be sure to try the best Dim Sum.

North Beach, rich in Italian heritage, compresses cabarets, jazz clubs, galleries, inns, family style restaurants and gelato parlors into less than a square mile. Coit Tower atop Telegraph Hill is blessed with marvelous views. A 360-degree view of the city is visible from the observation platform at the top of the tower.

A visit to San Francisco is not complete without visiting Fisherman’s Wharf with its fishing boats, sea lions basking in the sun, seafood stalls, steaming crab cauldrons, seafood restaurants and sourdough French bread bakeries. Head to Pier 39 and explore the dining, shopping and attractions on offer. Lined with deep-water piers, The Embarcadero is literally where one embarks. And, oh, “the places you’ll go!” At the foot of Market Street, is the Ferry Building, a vibrant public space housing a food hall, restaurants and a farmers market.

A mile and a half from Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz was the site of the first lighthouse built on the Pacific Coast, then a federal prison for such notorious convicts as Al Capone. Now it is one of the city's most popular attractions. A visit to the island includes a tour of the cell house where visitors can see where the prisoners lived.

DAY 1 ARRIVE SAN DIEGO

Depart the UK on your chosen scheduled flight to San Diego. Upon arrival, transfer to the US Grant. This evening, join your travelling companions for a welcome reception and dinner.

DAY 2 SAN DIEGO

This morning, enjoy a city tour, which starts with the Gaslamp Quarter and the extensive harbor area. Then it is on to historic Point Loma before viewing the city’s unforgettable skyline from the Juan Cabrillo National Monument. There is time to explore Seaport Village at leisure before departing on an evening champagne cruise aboard a private yacht, showcasing San Diego’s beautiful harbour and skyline.

DAY 3 LOS ANGELES

Following breakfast, your journey continues north to the historic ruin of Mission San Juan Capistrano which was founded in 1776. Next it’s on to glittering Los Angeles where lunch is enjoyed at the legendary Los Angeles Farmer's Market. A tour of the city includes the sights and sounds of Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills before reaching the TCL Chinese Theatre, where celebrities’ autographs, handprints and footprints are immortalized in concrete.

DAY 4 SANTA BARBARA

This morning’s highlight is a visit to The Getty Museum, set high in the Santa Monica Mountains. Next, it’s just a short journey to Mediterranean-inspired Santa Barbara, filled with soft white beaches, terracotta buildings and an eclectic mix of shopping options. Your afternoon is at leisure to wander picturesque Stearns Wharf, before checking into your deluxe hotel and deciding where you’d like to enjoy dinner from a choice of restaurants.

DAY 5 SANTA BARBARA

There is so much to see outside of downtown Santa Barbara and all is revealed on this morning’s city tour. Highlights include the city’s historic 1929 Courthouse and Mission Santa Barbara which is still active after 225 years of service. The afternoon is yours to relax by the hotel pool or explore further.

DAY 6 CENTRAL COAST & MORRO BAY

This morning, you’ll travel along infamous Highway 101 to the Central California wine region, where a vineyard tour and tasting introduces you to the wine varieties of the region. Lunch is in Pismo Beach, before arrival into Morro Bay and a walking nature tour of the area.

DAY 7 BIG SUR & HEARST CASTLE

Whilst in San Simeon you’ll visit Hearst Castle, before continuing on scenic Highway 1 – perhaps one of the most beautiful drives in America, along the famed Big Sur Coast. Your destination is the small coastal city of Monterey, where you’ll dine at your hotel on the pristine bay.

DAY 8 MONTEREY & CARMEL

Take a tour of the Monterey Peninsula, including 17 Mile Drive, Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach before heading to pretty Carmel-by-the-Sea for lunch. A short stroll from your hotel is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where this afternoon you’ll discover the unexpected delights of marine life.

DAY 9 YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

This morning, you drive through the farmlands, orchards and vineyards of California’s Central Valley before heading high into the Sierra Nevada Mountains to Yosemite National Park. Dinner is enjoyed at your hotel.

DAY 10 YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

Today, enjoy a full day exploring this famous landmark on a tram tour, including visits to the world-famous El Capitan and Half Dome cliffs, and the plunging waters of Bridalveil Falls. Following lunch at Wawona Village, you’ll visit Mariposa Grove – prepare to be amazed by the sheer size of the Giant Sequoias.

DAY 11 SAN FRANCISCO
