The Palm Beaches

‘Life’s a beach’ and Palm Beach County’s 47 mile stretch of breathtaking coastline means that every day is a beach day in this elegant region of Florida. In fact, this part of Florida’s east coast, from Jupiter Beach in the north to Boca Raton in the south is perhaps one of the most stunning ocean landscapes in Florida.

Although location plays a huge part in our holiday decisions, many other factors influence our choice. In particular ‘what do I do when I get there?’ Let me introduce you to a destination which ticks all the boxes. Fabulous location – yes. The finest hotels – yes. Elegant spas – yes. Upscale shopping – yes. Equestrian activities – yes. Championship golf – yes. Award-winning dining – yes. You don’t have to choose, Palm Beach County has it all!

Take to the water

The 47 miles of Atlantic coastline and countless waterways offer no shortage of liquid assets in The Palm Beaches. The endless water activities include fishing, diving, snorkelling, sailing, paddle-boarding, canoeing, kayaking, jet skiing, boating and yachting. With an average annual temperature of 78 degrees and ample Florida sunshine, this enviable subtropical climate provides an ideal environment for year-round outdoor aquatic fun. The Palm Beaches are the closest place in North America to the Gulf Stream current, an oceanic conveyor belt of warm water and an artery for marine life to migrate, such as sea turtles (home to five of the seven species), manatees, tropical fish, sailfish, goliath grouper and dolphins. The destination’s off-shore reefs are home to a diverse abundance of marine life, and its warm, clear water makes it a tropical paradise for bathers, snorkelers and scuba divers. A large selection of marinas and dockside restaurants along the Intracoastal Waterway are available for travellers who want to spend their entire day on the water.

Florida's cultural hub

More than 200 cultural attractions make this destination Florida’s Cultural Capital®, including theaters, museums, art centers, indoor and outdoor auditoriums, enchanting gardens and other cultural venues. A small sampling of attractions includes the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, Norton Museum of Art, Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, Wick Theatre and Costume Museum, Silverball Museum & Arcade and the Boca Raton Museum of Art. A variety of cultural opportunities include nationally recognized performers and dozens of past and ongoing internationally renowned annual events, such as Artigras, Art Palm Beach, SunFest, Lake Worth Street Painting Festival, the Delray Affair, Art Palm Beach and Boca’s Festival of The Arts. The Cultural Council of Palm Beach County offers a unique Cultural Concierge program that provides visitors with complimentary insider recommendations, exclusive amenities and customized experiences.

Family fun times

More than 100 family-friendly attractions welcome parents and kids to a variety of educational and cultural opportunities to enjoy. Families can climb up the historic Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse for a spectacular view of the county and nearby coast, get close to sea turtles and marine life at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center, feed a giraffe at Lion Country Safari, make a discovery in the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, canoe the waterways of The Everglades, make a splash at Rapids Waterpark in Boomers or hike through Florida’s Natural Scenic Trail.

The Palm Beaches wild side

As the gateway to The Florida Everglades, The Palm Beaches provide prime access to explore this U.S. natural treasure. The Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge comprises more than 221 square miles of The Everglades and is surrounded by a 57-mile canal and levee system. Enjoy the unique experience of an airboat tour along some of Florida’s most serene and scenic waterways. Paddling is also a popular way to explore these awe-inspiring surroundings and spot native wildlife. Farther north, the Grassy Waters Preserve is a 23-square-mile wetland that remains a pristine remnant of this ancient ecosystem. Artists come to paint this mosaic of wetlands, tree islands and forested hammocks. Other attractions of interest include the many unique and scenic state parks, campgrounds and hiking trails.

Relaxation

With a reputation for prestigious hotels battling for the right to boast the best spa in Palm Beach County, you can be assured of a spa experience second-to-none wherever you stay. Massages, body treatments, hair and nail salon services and full wellness regimes. Escape for just an hour or relinquish yourself to a full day of relaxation and rejuvenation, a visit to the spa slots into any schedule.

One of the top 25 spas’s in North America, The Spa at The Breakers indulges you with stress relieving massages, body wraps, revitalizing scrubs and nourishing facials, boasting oceans of calming possibilities. Head to Si Spa at the Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island for treatments customized to your wellness needs, themed on the therapeutic qualities of seawater and the mesmerizing rhythm of waves breaking on the beach. Go on… spoil yourself.

Shopping

Perhaps the areas most famous shopping destination is upscale Worth Avenue. Just steps from the ocean, it features an array of luxury boutiques and al fresco dining. In West Palm Beach you can browse Clematis Street or The Square – a thoughtfully curated mix of more than 50 shops and restaurants. Visit The Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens, or Town Centre Mall in Boca Raton – the various malls house no fewer than five Macy’s, plus Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, Nordstom, Saks Fifth Avenue and a whole host of speciality stores. Make sure you pack lightly, so you’ve room to bring your many purchases home.

Golfing

Palm Beach County is known as “Florida’s Golf Capital” and it more than lives up to its excellent reputation. Imagine the choice as you ponder which of the 160 meticulously manicured golf courses you’d like to play today, each designed around cascading waterfalls, calm lakes, rolling hills, palm trees, and sub-tropical foliage. Whether you’re looking for a demanding course, something less of a challenge, onsite pros to assist with your game or instructional academies, Palm Beach County has what you’re looking for.

If you’re looking to combine your golf passion with a little relaxation, this destination would be a perfect choice as some of the best and most fabled courses can be found at Palm Beach County’s top hotel resorts. Take the Ocean Course at The Breakers for example. Florida’s oldest 18-hole course, it has been testing golfer’s skills since 1896. There are also four championship courses at The Boca Raton, ranked by Golf Magazine as one of America’s top golf resorts. Add to these the five spectacular tournament courses at the PGA National Resort and already the choice is somewhat difficult.

Equestrian

Palm Beach County is all about lifestyle, so it’s no surprise that the equestrian world is drawn from far and wide to pair its love for Polo, Steeplechase and Dressage with warm sunny weather, a leisurely champagne tipple and lots of fun.

This is home to the International Polo Club Palm Beach, which was designed to showcase the incredible skill of the ponies and players. Many exciting tournaments are played here, mainly between the months of January and April, culminating in the prestigious US Polo Championship.

Head to Wellington and the western communities where flying over stiles and fences in steeplechase is not only an exciting pursuit to take part in, but just as entertaining to watch. If you’re looking for a less vigorous equestrian sport, you can’t help but admire the precision and dedication it takes for dressage. When you’ve finished watching everyone else take to the saddle, why not do so yourself? No matter what your riding level, there are lots of stables and miles upon miles of trails to explore in a variety of natural parks. So grab your hat and boots, saddle up your horse and as they say in the movies ‘ride the range’.
