Day 5

Annapolis

33mi / 53km

Annapolis has a laid-back, maritime feel and some of the most stunning scenery on the east coast. The city’s narrow streets feature historic homes and restored buildings, such as Hammond-Harwood House from the 18th century and Maryland State House: completed back in 1779.

Graduate Annapolis Hotel, Annapolis
Day 6

St Michaels

51mi / 82km

Today take the short journey to the beautiful Chesapeake Harbour Town of St Michaels. Known as the ‘town that fooled the British’, it is said that the townspeople hung lanterns in the trees during the War of 1812: causing the cannons to overshoot the houses.

Inn at Perry Cabin, St Michaels
Day 7, 8

Cambridge

27mi / 43km

Heading Southwest today you may wish to visit Tilghman Island, home of Chesapeake Bay’s remaining skipjacks and the small town of Oxford: once a major port and shipbuilding centre. The 1684 port town of Cambridge has many historic homes, buildings and museums.

Day 10, 11

Williamsburg

Day 12

Charlottesville & Keswick

122mi / 196km

You may wish to route via Richmond today to see the White House of the Confederacy and Maymount Plantation. Then it’s on to Charlottesville, where you’ll find Montecello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. Sitting atop a mountain in Albermarle, it is described as one of the country’s foremost architectural masterpieces.

Omni Hotel, Charlottesville
Day 13, 14

Shenandoah National Park & Luray

25mi / 40km

The most scenic drive of your itinerary, the picture perfect setting of Skyline Drive is quite breathtaking. Shenandoah Valley has over 500 miles of hiking trails, winding through lush forests and valleys filled with wildflowers, trickling streams and waterfalls. Luray Caverns are the largest caverns on the east coast and well worth a trip.

Accommodations in Shenandoah National Park close in winter due to the weather conditions. Should you wish to remain in the area, accommodation would be in the town of Luray. Between November and March, we suggest you head to Middleburg for the last two nights, staying in the luxurious Salamander Resort & Spa. Enjoy this equestrian region of quaint small towns and a plethora of cider orchards and wine vineyards. From here it is a very short drive back to Washington Dullus Airport for your flight home.

Skyland Resort, Shenandoah National Park
Day 15

Journey Home

Take the short drive back to the capital, return your rental car and check-in for your flight back to the UK.
