We have allowed a full day for you to explore the delights of Memphis – and there are many for you to enjoy! A visit to Memphis would not be complete without visiting Graceland, the infamous home of Elvis Presley – King of Rock ‘n Roll. If music is of interest, you should also include Sun Studio’s where many greats recorded and the Rock ‘n Soul Museum and don’t forget The STAX Museum of American Soul Music which celebrates great Memphis Soul music made famous by the likes of Otis Redding. The National Civil Rights Museum is located at the historic Lorraine Motel where Dr Martin Luther King Junior was assassinated in 1968. The museum trails the long history of the Civil Rights movement from slavery to modern times. Dining options are aplenty, but we’d suggest some Deep South soul food and a drink on Beale Street.
Today see’s the start of the highlight of your journey! You’ll enjoy a unique cruising experience, aboard a paddlewheel steamboat, along the mighty Mississippi River. Fully refreshed, whilst remaining sympathetic to the ship’s heritage, American Queen’s modern amenities complement the opulence and décor you would expect from the American Victorian era. As one of the largest and most elegant steamboats ever built, stepping aboard is like walking into the warm and inviting ambience of an antebellum mansion, featuring glistening woodwork, fresh flowers and antique furnishings. Your seven night sailing takes you along the Lower Mississippi River, sailing to Vicksburg, Natchez, Baton Rouge, St. Francisville and Nottoway before arriving into New Orleans.
On arrival into New Orleans, disembark the paddlewheeler and make your way downtown, to the contemporary Le Meridien New Orleans – your base for the next two nights. Everyone adores New Orleans! This colourful city is overflowing with history, vibrant characters, warmth and charm. Hop on board a Street Car and view the city from a new perspective, wander the French market where hot chocolate and crepes draw visitors from far and wide or tour the French Quarter – with its Jekyll and Hyde characters by day and night. Canal Street is the traditional starting point for any tour of New Orleans. Head off in any direction from this downtown hub and you are bound to see or find something of scenic or historic interest. The Warehouse District which was once a 19th century storage district for coffee and grain is known today as the New Orleans Arts District filled with amazing art galleries, fine restaurants, and world-class museums.
Le Meridien New OrleansEnjoy your final morning in New Orleans, perhaps shopping or picking up some souvenirs, before you make your way to the airport and check-in for your flight back to the UK.
