The seventh biggest state in America, Nevada offers visitors so much more than the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas. From the cowboy country of Elko to the ghost towns around Genoa and Ely, the options for adventure are endless.

Elko, known as 'Nevada with attitude' is a true cowboy town. Take time to stop by one of the saloons downtown and have a drink with real cowboys, or shop in one of the many leather shops on Main Street. Elko is also the home to the National Cowboy Poetry festival, where cowboys from all around the US gather and recite poems they have written about their adventures.

Nevada is also a paradise for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Lake Tahoe in the north of the state, offers one of the best ski resorts in North America during the winter, while boasting incredible water sports and mountain activities during the summer months. Rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking are all found throughout the state, giving visitors the opportunity to see the beauty of Nevada first hand.

The state is also famous for its gambling, with many of the towns and cities in Nevada, all featuring at least one casino. The love for gambling in the state comes from the days of the silver mining, which was once prominent in the state. Ghost towns and abandoned mines can be found throughout Nevada and are well worth a visit.

Las Vegas is undoubtedly the most famous of Nevada’s locations is like nowhere else on earth! A near-perfect climate is nature’s gift to this breathtaking destination. The spectacular shows, unique hotels and magnificent facilities are Las Vegas’s gift to us. Whether looking for a short break to enjoy some winter sunshine, taking a couple of days for some fun in the desert or going to spend an entire two week vacation here, Las Vegas is a ‘must see’ destination.

    • Top Tip 1

Make sure you allow a couple of hours to include Hoover Dam in your itinerary. Take one of the guided tours deep down into the dam to see it from the inside and learn how it was built.

    • Top Tip 2

Enjoy a Basque meal at the Star Hotel in Elko. In the mid 19th century, a wave of immigrants from the Basque region ended up in Nevada, working as sheepherders and Basque restaurants still remain throughout the region.

    • Top Tip 3

Take in one of the many ghost towns dotted throughout the state. There are actually more ghost towns in Nevada than populated towns!

    • Top Tip 4

Take a Maverick Helicopter night flight over The Strip in Las Vegas. The 12 minute flight is the best way to see the spectacle of neon lights.

    • Top Tip 5

Treat yourself to dinner at the three Michelin Star Joel Robuchon restaurant at MGM Grand, but book well ahead, especially if you're there over a weekend (and be sure to arrange for them to send their gold stretched limousine to collect you from your hotel).

    • Top Tip 6

Visit the East Ely Railroad Depot Museum, telling the history of the regions mining heritage. We recommend pairing this with a trip on the historical Northern Nevada Railway in the same complex.

    • Top Tip 7

Include Lake Tahoe in your itinerary. Incline Village on the Nevada side of the lake is wonderful any time of year with great skiing in the winter and beautiful golf and lake activities in the summer... oh, and spectacular scenery year round.

    • Top Tip 8

For the best value, plan your stay in Las Vegas for Sunday through Thursday nights - the hotels offer great deals for midweek stays and everything is quieter too.

    • Top Tip 9

Witness the exhilarating action of the National Championship Air Races in Reno every September. See planes race around the desert course at speeds of over 300mph in one of the only remaining air races in North America.

    Elko

Your adventure starts this morning, as you head west; skimming the south shores of Great Salt Lake and crossing Great Salt Lake Desert. Leaving Utah behind you cross the state line into Nevada. We suggest lunch in Wendover and a stop in Wells before arriving in Elko where you spend the next two nights. Elko sits in the heart of Cowboy Country. Here you can visit the California Trails Center; which presents the history of the Gold Rush, Western Migration, Pioneers and the Donner Party. Next visit historic downtown Elko and take time to see the amazing saddles and leather creations at Capriola’s Saddle Shop. Reno

It is a fairly long drive today, but wonderfully scenic as you cross Cowboy Country - an area renowned for strapping on your hat and pulling on your boots and where nobody stands on ceremony. If you want to stretch your legs make a stop at Rye Patch State Recreation Area for a picnic beneath tall cottonwoods. If you’re feeling romantic, lock your love in Lovelock by fastening a lock on the never-ending chain at Lovers Lock Plaza, or simply admire the more than 1,000 locks that adorn the plaza. Reno, also known as ‘The Biggest Little City in the World’, was the original sin city where, at the beginning of the 20th Century, it gained national notoriety for being the city people came to for gambling, drinking and divorce. In recent years it has seen something of a cultural resurgence with shopping, galleries and restaurants. Enjoy your stay in Reno by visiting the world class spas, browsing the extensive selection of shops, trying out the largest outdoor climbing wall in the world, or visiting the National Automobile Museum which features some of the most famous cars from Bill Harrah’s collection. For a more active day, try the downtown white-water kayak course or if spectator sports are more your thing, stroll the Riverwalk area.

    Lake Tahoe

It is a short drive to Lake Tahoe, so we suggest you take a longer route along interstate 580 to visit some of the regions popular attractions; Carson City - Nevada’s Capital, Virginia City - a beautiful old Mining Town and Genoa - Nevada’s first settlement. Carson City, the state capital, is only half an hour south of Reno. Highlights along Main Street include the capitol building, Nevada state museum and Nevada state railroad museum which offers diesel or steam train rides for visitors. Carson City also boasts nine golf courses; whilst nearby Carson valley is home to vast ranches, antique shops and Victoria homes. Tahoe Ridge Winery, one of Nevada’s four wineries, has a tasting room and a restaurant in Carson Valley – a perfect place to stop for some lunch and wine tasting. Once a vital mining settlement, Virginia City is a gem of the Old West. Spend time walking the plank boardwalks, browsing the shops and dimly lit saloons, venturing into an old mine (preserved to its original layout) and ride on the Historic V&T Railroad to experience real history. Genoa is Nevada’s first settlement and a quaint little town, with beautiful scenery and “Nevada’s Oldest Thirst Palour” – Genoa Bar and Saloon, which is a key experience. Since 1853 drinks have been served at this bar which has welcomed presidents, actors and famous musicians through the years. Once in stunning Lake Tahoe, you will find picture postcard scenery of sparkling crystal clear water reflecting snow clad mountains. Lake Tahoe is a classic American lakeside resort, with log cabins, tall pine trees, soft, yellow sand beaches and a wealth of activities and water sports to keep you entertained. The north shore is anchored by the town of incline village, which boasts two golf courses, a ski resort, and two lake front hotels. The town of Stateline is situated on the south shore and is known for its large scale casino resorts, Heavenly mountain resort and Edgewood Tahoe Golf course. From South Lake Tahoe, you can board the M.S. Dixie II or the Tahoe Queen and enjoy a relaxing cruise, taking in the magnificent views of the azure coloured lake and rugged mountains. During the summer, Tahoe is perfect for water and beach activities, hiking and bicycling, whilst the winter months turn Tahoe into a skiers’ paradise, with winter sports such as tobogganing and ice skating.

Todays drive takes you from Tahoe to Ely. We suggest a stop for lunch in Eureka followed by a tour of the 1881 Eureka Opera House. Your journey continues along the ‘Loneliest Road in America’ to your base for the next two nights in Ely. Tonight why not have dinner in a jail cell at Cell Block Steak House at the Jail House Casino Motel? We have allowed you a full day to explore the area. Start by riding the rails on Nevada Northern Railway, also known as the Ghost Train before exploring the East Ely Railroad Depot museum which is home to Nevada’s Official State Locomotive Engine #40. Don’t miss out on a visit to Renaissance Village, where homes built in 1908 have been restored to portray different ethnic backgrounds, showing the diversity of cultures that settled in the area. Follow a detailed map of Ely’s magical outdoor art and you will find masterful works of art from artists around the world who have depicted the history and variety of cultures that shaped this historic mining town.

Hotel: DoubleTree by Hilton. Grand Junction (No meals)

    Day 02

    Moab

    Hotel: Red Cliffs Lodge (Dinner)

    Day 03

    Arches National Park

An early start this morning to witness the sun rise in the Windows section of Arches National Park; the first light of day on Turret Arch and Double Arch creates picture-postcard photography. Arches National Park holds the world's largest concentration of natural sandstone arches with over 2,000 throughout the park. View Delicate Arch, the amazing Balanced Rock, and a variety of sensational geological formations during guided sightseeing before returning to the lodge for lunch.

Get set for adventure this afternoon when you depart on a scenic float trip along on the Colorado River. There is an optional Sunset Scouts walk, before spending your evening in the lodge, where you dine at your leisure and are steeped in the authenticity of an architectural style that defines the West.

Hotel: Red Cliffs Lodge (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

    Day 04

    Canyonlands National Park

Enjoy a morning trip to Castle Rock with spectacular views of Book Cliffs and Arches National Park – from the top of a mesa, enjoy views that extend out to Arches National Park, Colorado, and the La Salle Mountains. A lecture by a local Navajo connects you to the sacredness of the desert, to the ancient spiritual life that transcends today’s world. Depart for the little town of Moab, then on to Canyonlands National Park, whose countless canyons, mesas and buttes shadow the Colorado River and the Green River. These rivers divide the park into four districts – today you’ll explore the northern section, Island in the Sky, where among other formations you’ll see a famed pothole arch, Mesa Arch, overlooking Buck Canyon. There is no better way to experience Canyonlands than at sunset – and the setting sun, during a picnic dinner at Dead Horse Point overlooking the U-turn in the Colorado River, is nothing short of inspirational.

Hotel: Red Cliffs Lodge (Breakfast and dinner)

    Day 05

    Bryce Canyon

Enjoy some free time this morning – go on an optional Dawn Patrol or visit the Film Museum at the lodge. For the past 70 years, many of the most famous western movies were filmed in and around Moab – learn about the filming locations and the stars who brought them to life. Gain insight from Dayton Duncan as to the best way to access the major sights in the national parks; some are available at a turnout, while others are inaccessible and require back-country hiking or an aerial overview – and that is exactly how you’ll tour Capitol Reef National Park today. Cross the Waterpocket Fold, which is sort of a “warp” in the Earth’s crust that runs nearly 100 miles, and see Strike Valley, the spectacular sandstone Capitol Domes that give the park its name, colourful cliffs and soaring spires. Arrive at Bryce Canyon National Park, home to some of Earth’s more whimsical geologic formations; spend some time at the Visitor Centre and enjoy some free time before dinner – there is an optional Sunset Scouts this evening.

Hotel: The Lodge at Bryce Canyon (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

    Day 06

    Zion

Another independent Dawn Patrol is available this morning – a hike along the rim of Bryce Canyon to catch the shocking array of colours illuminated by the first rays of light on the hoodoos below. More of a series of horseshoe “amphitheatres” than a canyon, morning walks reveal millions of pinnacles positively glowing. This afternoon, depart for Zion National Park; en route you’ll learn about the park’s complicated creation via a film  by Ken Burns, who shares his favourite memories of the park. Upon arrival, Ryan Paul, Curator of Frontier Homestead State Park Museum (formerly Iron Mission State Park), entertains with a lecture on “singaways” and the contribution of the Union Pacific Railroad to the story of the national parks. There is an independent Sunset Scouts opportunity tonight to the historic Virgin River bridge located at the mouth of the canyon.

Hotel: Zion Lodge (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

    Day 07

    Zion

Zion’s most striking images are unique sandstone cliffs that range from towering monoliths to narrow canyons, changing in colour from light cream to pink to red. Tour the park, with walks to Weeping Rock and the Court of the Patriarchs, then have some free time to explore as you please. Late afternoon, internationally acclaimed environmental historian and author Alfred Runte gives a talk on the history of the railroad in the national parks. This evening, you may choose to do an independent Sunset Scouts’ visit to the Virgin River, a tributary of the Colorado River that earned the designation “wild and scenic".

Hotel: Zion Lodge (Breakfast and dinner)

    Day 08

    Grand Canyon

Leave Zion, and en route to Grand Canyon National Park get a guided tour of fascinating Pipe Spring National Monument to learn about Paiute Indian and Mormon pioneer history. Drive to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, a place more intimate and less crowded than the South Rim, with fewer than 10% of the park’s total annual visitors. Following lunch, explore the North Rim, including the vistas from Point Imperial. Dinner tonight is at the Grand Canyon Lodge - North Rim.

Hotel: Grand Canyon Lodge - North Rim (Breakfast, lunch and dinner)

    Day 09

    Grand Canyon

Spend today exploring the Grand Canyon at your leisure. Optional activities include mule rides and additional ranger talks about history and geology.

Hotel: Grand Canyon Lodge - North Rim (Breakfast and dinner)

    Day 10

    Las Vegas

Today you fly from Kanab over the western regions of the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas for your return home. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks and a farewell dinner with your travel companions.
