Atlanta

During the next three days in Atlanta, there are endless possibilities for you to explore. Stop by the Atlanta History Center or visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Historical Site, a moving tribute to an American icon. Browse through the former home of famous author Margaret Mitchell or pop into the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum. There are endless shopping options in Atlanta from shopping malls, boutiques, upscale fashion areas, and outlet shopping centers.

Day 4, 5

Helen

75mi / 121km

Once you have had your hearty breakfast and checked out of your Atlanta hotel, it’s time to collect your RV and hit the road. When you are ready, head northeast into the Georgia mountains and the southern tip of the great Appalachian Mountain range. Your stop for the next 2 nights is only about 75 miles north in the small and charming mountain town of Helen. On the way stop in Dahlonega, the site of the first gold rush in the USA back in 1828. Spend the next full day exploring the rugged mountain scenery including Vogel State Park, one of the oldest and most dramatic in Georgia and Toccoa Falls, one of the highest east of the Mississippi and even higher than Niagara Falls!

Sightseeing in the North Georgia Mountains

Day 6

Augusta

160mi / 257km

Head out of the mountains and across the heartlands of Georgia. Your stop for the night is in the town of Augusta (famous as the home of the Master’s golf tournament) but along the way do stop in the lively college town of Athens. Home to the University of Georgia and a thriving music scene that gave birth to names such as R.E.M and the B-52s. Your campground for the night is set on Clarks Hill Lake with over 1000 miles of coastline it is one of the largest lakes in the Southeastern United States.

Day 7, 8

Savannah & Tybee Island

122mi / 196km

Today you will continue your journey south largely following the Savannah River to the beautiful and charming city of Savannah, your base for the next two nights. It is one of the best walking cities in the country so we suggest driving to the campground first and then picking up the Old Town trolley service and making your way into the city. Whilst there are many things to do here, one of the most enjoyable is to just walk the many squares that dot the city and simply take in the southern charm, amazing architecture, and rich history dating back to 1733.

Sightseeing in Savannah

Day 9, 10

Jekyll Island

95mi / 153km

After some time of learning about culture and history, it is time to kick back a little and explore some of the stunning Atlantic coastlines that Georgia is rightly famous for. There are a number of options as you head south including the nearby and very popular Tybee Island, but our suggestion for the next two nights is the magnificent Jekyll Island. Much of the island is protected so there is a great balance between activities for all the family and just relaxing and exploring the many miles of untouched white sand beaches. The campground is within walking distance of the famous Driftwood beach. Be aware this is a very popular campground so book early!

Sightseeing in Jekyll Island

Day 11

Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

64mi / 103km

Another short drive today as you leave the island and head to a real national gem, the wonderfully named Okefenokee (o-key-fen-o-key) Swamp. Encompassing over 650 sq. miles, this ecological wonder is one of the largest intact freshwater wetlands in the world and home to up to 15,000 alligators along with hundreds of species of reptiles and mammals including the black bear and turtles, and raccoons. There are a few different entrances, but we recommend the Suwannee Canal Recreation Area as it’s the easiest to access from the coast and gator sightings are a near certainty.

Day 12

Columbus

243mi / 391km

This will be the longest drive of the itinerary, so we suggest you head off early and travel across the state towards Columbus. As you drive west across the state, you will pass rural farmlands where crops like peanuts, peaches, and blueberries grow, found at one of the many roadsides stands you will pass on your journey. Do break up the journey a little and sample some of the wonderful delicacies on offer. Stop at Providence Canyon, known as Georgia’s ‘Little Grand Canyon’ with its otherworldly rock formations and deep treelined gullies.

Day 13

Stone Mountain Park

120mi / 193km

This is your last full day and after your long drive yesterday, we suggest spending the morning in Columbus and visiting the fantastic Coca-Cola Space Science Center. Owned by the state university this place is a space-themed wonderland with mission & launch simulators, a space observatory, and a giant planetarium amongst many other interactive exhibits. In the afternoon head back towards Atlanta and spend your last night at Stone Mountain Park, a 3200-acre park. The campground is within the park to give you the ultimate access to the variety of attractions and entertainment available.

Day 14

Journey Home

25mi / 40km

It’s only a 25-mile drive back to Atlanta and Cruise America this morning, so depending on your flight time, you may have an extra few hours to do some last-minute exploring. You will then make your way back to Atlanta International Airport and check-in for your flight to the UK.
