Boston

Boston is a city rich in history and culture, so head out and explore. Take time to visit the waterfront, where seafood restaurants overlook the bustling harbour bringing the freshest ingredients to the table. From here you can take a whale watch boat tour or perhaps a catamaran trip out to the islands, and you can also find the city’s Aquarium. Follow the Freedom Trail, a walking route that starts at Copley Park and traces many historical attractions. Your hotel is located a few steps from the great shopping of Copley Place Mall and the eateries of Newbury Street.

Chatham

88mi / 142km

Today you will collect your rental car and leave the big city behind, heading south to the coastal town of Chatham, located at the southeast tip of Massachusetts and half-way down the 75-mile-long Cape Cod Peninsula. We have allowed three nights in Chatham, giving you ample time to explore not just the town, but all that Cape Cod has to offer. This is the perfect base from which to explore the northern tip of Cape Cod, an area where you will find quirky Provincetown less than an hour’s drive away. While visiting Provincetown we highly recommend booking the Whale Watch Cruise. The towns of Hyannis and Falmouth are just thirty minutes and one hour away respectively, giving you even more coastal splendour. In Hyannis, we also offer a Whale Watching Cruise. This is also the region from where you would catch the passenger ferry to Cape Cod’s islands of Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket, should you wish to take a day trip or extend your holiday.

Day 7

Gloucester

123mi / 198km

This morning you will make your way back north to America’s oldest seaport town of Gloucester. En route, we recommend a stop-off in Plymouth which is home to the Plimoth Patuxet Museums, where each museum brings to life the history of Plymouth Colony and the Indigenous homeland. Once you arrive in Gloucester you will have time to explore this less-discovered coastal town. Gloucester offers rich maritime history, fresh-caught seafood restaurants, an active working waterfront, and several beautiful golden sand beaches giving you plenty of options to fill your time.

Day 8

Kennebunkport

84mi / 135km

After breakfast, you will leave Massachusetts behind and cross the state line into Maine. The journey meanders north along the coastal road to the town of Kennebunkport, where you can look forward to spending this evening. Whilst in Kennebunkport, we recommend taking to the sea for a sailing excursion to watch the whales at play, spend the day boating and fishing, or just enjoy the water sports available. On land, you could explore the region’s walking, biking, and horseback trails or enjoy a round of golf on the scenic golf courses. Perhaps just stroll the quaint towns shops and cafes? No matter what you decide Kennebunkport is a haven of peace and beauty.

It is rich in history and showcases quaint local shops and boutiques, with delicious dining options and world-class boat excursions. Boothbay harbour has over 25 daily boat tours, the perfect way to explore the area and see nearby islands like Burnt Island or Monhegan Island. Looking for something on land, then take a look at the Boothbay Harbour Culinary Walking Tour. This three-hour tour visits some of the area’s locally-owned restaurants, gourmet shops, and inns, enjoying samples of local dishes at each stop.

Your final destination in the state of Maine is Bar Harbour, your base for the next two nights and the gateway to the incredible Acadia National Park. The majestic mansions of Bar Harbour serve as a reminder of the town’s incredible past, while today visitors can enjoy kayaking, whale watching or just sitting back and enjoying the salty sea air and sandy beaches with an ice-cream in hand. During the next two days, a visit to Acadia National Park is a must with its granite cliffs, sand and cobblestone beaches, and glacier-carved mountains. The park offers over 120 miles of hiking and biking trails or for something a little more adrenaline-fueled, you could take a scenic flight over the park.

There are family attractions, historic sites, concerts, country fairs, nature tours, and fun festivals that provide enjoyment for all interests and ages. For outdoor enthusiasts, the options are almost endless with choices that include water sports, boat rides, fishing tours, and hiking and biking trails. For avid shoppers and food lovers, the quaint town offers a variety of distinctive shops, antique galleries, and an array of restaurants with unique back-drops from rustic barns, antique homes, renovated mills and not forgetting lakeside and al fresco dining.

Salem is located on the beautiful Cape Ann, a stretch of land arcing into the Atlantic just north of Boston. During your time in Salem, we recommend visiting the Salem Witch Museum where you can learn about the infamous witch trials of 1692, and the Maritime National Historic site located in Derby Wharf ,which is an easy walk from downtown Salem. For your final evening, Salem is home to many great dining and drinking establishments, one we recommend is the Mercy Tavern (formally known as In a Pigs Eye) a gastropub that offers a great dining experience with live music.
