Day 1

Arrive Halifax

Depart the UK on your chosen scheduled flight to Halifax. Upon arrival, collect your rental car and proceed to your hotel, located in the heart of town, where you will spend the next three nights.

Day 2, 3

Halifax

Halifax is cosmopolitan and eclectic, with its eyes on the future and feet firmly in the past. Fresh sea air enhances its exhilarating mix of modern towers and colonial brick buildings, avenues lined with hip cafes, shops and galleries, surrounded by gracious Victorian parks and gardens. We’d highly recommend a guided cruise from Halifax Harbour where views of the city’s significant landmarks can be seen and unusual insights, such a look at its raucous privateering history, can be heard. Whilst at the waterfront, take a trip to the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, for insight into the journeys and heartfelt stories of one million Canadian immigrants, before discovering Halifax Seaport Farmers Market and hearing captivating sea stories at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. No visit would be complete without visiting Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, standing at the ‘top’ of the city, you’ll be greeted by the distinctive Clock Tower that looks over Halifax. Completed in 1856, Citadel was built as a military fortification to protect the Empire from enemies.

Day 4, 5, 6

Cape Breton Island

217mi / 349km

Depart Halifax for your journey to Cape Breton Island, a little piece of Scotland in North America. Your next three nights will be based in the central location of Baddeck. During your time here we suggest exploring the fabulous Cabot Trail around Cape Breton Island for awe-inspiring views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The route winds through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, where you’ll find 28 beautiful hiking trails between Cheticamp and Ingonish – the most recommended would be the Skyline Trail located about 15 minutes drive from the park entrance. You may also wish to visit the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre, Glenora Distillery, Acadian Cultural Centre & Museum or St. Ann’s Gaelic College of Arts & Crafts. Take a full day to explore The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. This incredible ‘living museum’ is the largest historical reconstruction in North America; it is an impressive restoration of a French garrison town dating from the 1700s, complete with costumed interpreters who re-enact daily life from the French colonial period. You can even sample period food in the restaurant, or take part in a mock battle.
