Welcome to the land of the northern lights or the midnight sun and the gateway to to Alaska’s vast Interior and expansive Arctic.  Fairbanks is one of best places on earth to experience the beautiful and mysterious northern lights. Bright, energetic curtains of yellow, green, red or even purple light brighten the night skies regularly. Strike it rich panning for gold, float the Chena River, mingle with reindeer and musk oxen, cool off in an ice museum, take a refreshing hike, or be inspired by brilliant art galleries, museums, and historic sites. You’ll find the shopping in Fairbanks a little different with the Alaska Native handmade items crafted with astonishing detail.

The White Mountains National Recreation Area is just north of town, with a wild river and extensive trail system. Head north to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. Access the North Slope or the Arctic Circle. Visit Barrow, Fort Yukon, Anaktuvuk Pass, Galena, Coldfoot, Beaver, Ruby, Bettles and the Yukon River.

Natural Wonders and Outdoor Activities

  1. Aurora Borealis Viewing:
    Best time to view is late August to April. Popular spots include Chena Hot Springs Resort and Murphy Dome.
  2. Chena Hot Springs Resort:
    Relax in the natural hot springs, great for aurora viewing on a cold night. Tour the Aurora Ice Museum, which features ice sculptures and an ice bar.
  3. Riverboat Discovery Cruise:
    Take a scenic boat tour on the Chena and Tanana Rivers and learn about local history, culture, and wildlife.
  4. Pioneer Park:
    Explore this historical theme park with museums, a pioneer village, and the SS Nenana sternwheeler.
  5. Denali National Park:
    While not in Fairbanks, it’s a popular day trip (about 2 hours away), where hiking, wildlife viewing, and stunning scenery of North America’s highest peak, Denali.

  1. University of Alaska Museum of the North:
    Features exhibits on Alaska’s natural and cultural history. View a diverse collection of artifacts, art, and specimens.
  2. Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center:
    Offers exhibits on Alaskan Native cultures, wildlife, and landscapes.
  3. Fairbanks Ice Museum:
    Learn about ice carving and see intricate ice sculptures. Enjoy an ice sculpting demonstration.
  4. Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum:
    Displays a collection of vintage automobiles and historic fashions. Learn about the history of transportation in Alaska.
