York, Kennebunkport & Ogunquit

York Harbour

Just over an hour north of Boston, located on the Southern Maine Coast, York Harbor is just one of the small villages within the town of York. Others include York Beach, York Village, and Cape Neddick.

York’s rich history, beautiful beaches, great shopping, and delicious restaurants make it one of the top vacation destinations in Maine every year. In York Harbor, you will find seaside inns and resorts, plus York Harbor Beach with a gentle surf and views of the Atlantic along with the comings and goings of the boats out of the harbor to York River. Walks across York’s Wiggly Bridge on York River or along the Cliff Walk are great ways to explore York’s waterfront and coastline.

Beachgoers will love York’s beaches. Long Sands is best known for its 2 mile stretch of white sand and good surfing action, while Short Sands Beach is popular for its amusement park atmosphere.

York also draws a large golfing crowd each year, with top Maine golf courses like the 18-Hole The Ledges Golf Club or York Golf and Tennis Club. York’s Wild Kingdom will keep the kids entertained with Maine’s largest zoo and an amusement park full of rides, games, and mini-golf. Kayakers will enjoy rowing down York River, 13-miles of smooth sailing that flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean.

Kennebunkport

Just two hours from Boston and you are at the stunning craggy coastline with crashing surf of New England and Kennebunkport, a haven of peace and beauty. Take to the sea for a sailing excursion and watch the whales at play, or spend the day boating and fishing or just enjoying the water sports available. On land explore the region walking, biking or horseback riding on the many trails or enjoy a round of golf on the scenic golf courses. Stroll through the pretty historic town with unique shops, boutiques and galleries and delightful dining options or pass by the summer home of George H. W. Bush.

Kennebunkport Beaches

Gooch’s, Middle Beach, and Mother’s Beach (aka Kennebunk Beach) are each unique and spectacular, from sand to stones to tidal pools. Just follow Beach Avenue, and you’ll see all three.

Colony Beach, a 150-foot stretch of sand located at the mouth of the Kennebunk River, is named for its location in front of the grand old Colony Hotel, usually offering small waves along its rocky sands. You can walk on the breakwater rocks to view boats in the harbor. It’s also a popular place for locals to fish for stripers.

Goose Rocks Beach is arguably the most scenic beach in Kennebunkport Maine, located a few miles from the centre of town in a more secluded and residential area beyond Cape Porpoise. The soft, flat sandy beach is ideal for walking or relaxing and enjoying the beautiful views of nearby Timber Island and the coast.

Ogunquit

Ogunquit or “beautiful place by the sea” in the indigenous Abenaki language, certainly lives up to its name with beautiful pristine beaches, a picturesque harbour with its colourful fishing boats and its unique draw footbridge.

Stroll or take the old fashioned trolley through the pretty town with its countless, art galleries, quaint shops, and fine restaurants serving fresh lobster and seafood.  Take a walk along the Marginal Way, a 1.25-mile path that winds along rocky cliffs overlooking the ocean with stunning views or head to the water for a boat ride or fishing trip.

Perkins Cove has a long history within the town. Formerly the home of shipbuilders and fishermen, the body of water is now a favorite among sightseers and boating enthusiasts. Art galleries, shops, and restaurants line the cove.

Cape Neddick

About 2 hours north of Boston, Cape Neddick offers a beautiful beach option on a New England itinerary. Located on the beautiful Maine coastline in the York Area, Cape Neddick incorporates the stunning York Beach. Offering over 3 miles of sand, York Beach is ideal for a beach stop on a fly-drive of New England.
