Grand Canyon

  • Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon really does take your breath away with its awesome views. The 5 million year old Grand Canyon is a must see with its seemingly never-ending, intricate landscape.

    • Grand Canyon

    • Grand Canyon Havasu Falls

      /

Grand Canyon – this powerful and inspiring landscape overwhelms the senses of the millions of people that visit each year. Carved by the mighty Colorado River over billions of years, it is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and 6000 feet deep and one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

The South Rim of the Canyon is the most accessible part of the National Park and is open all year round whereas the North Rim is much less accessible and heavy snow can sometimes close the road to the North Rim from late October to mid May each year.

Most visitors to the Grand Canyon travel in the summer months and marvel at it’s grandness from the South Rim. There are however many ways to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Canyon – take a helicopter flight from Grand Canyon Airport over the Canyon for the best aerial views; if you’re feeling energetic, take a guided hike down Bright Angel Trail or just wander as far as you wish on your own…but remember to wear the correct walking attire and have plenty of drinking water with you. For the more adventurous you can take either a 3 hour or an overnight mule trip. If you have more time, the best way to see the Grand Canyon is from the Colorado River so why not try a white water rafting experience. There are numerous trips each year, ranging from 3 days, departing from either Lees Ferry (near Lake Powell) or Phantom Ranch (at the foot of Bright Angel Trail) however they are very popular so you should plan at least a year ahead but it’s worth the wait! It’s an experience you will never forget.

    • Top Tip 1

Arizona positively teems with National Parks, not least the Grand Canyon. If you're planning to visit a number of national parks, save money by purchasing a National Park Annual Pass for just $80 per vehicle (it’s US$25 to enter the Grand Canyon, for example).

    • Top Tip 2

Take time out in Sedona to enjoy lunch by the creek at L'Auberge de Sedona. We can think of no better way to lose an afternoon!

    • Top Tip 3

The sunsets in Arizona are incredible. See as many as you can, camera at the ready, champagne in hand!

    • Top Tip 4

If you're driving from Scottsdale to the Grand Canyon, make sure you don't miss Oak Creek Canyon, just north of Sedona. The views are magnificent.

    • Top Tip 5

The Arizona desert is beautiful all year round, but if you want to see it in full bloom, visit during the spring when it's a carpet of colour.

    • Top Tip 6

If you're in Tucson during the summer and want to cool off, take a drive up Mount Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains. You'll ascend to 9,000ft and enjoy wonderful views and a perfect temperature.

    • Top Tip 7

From Scottsdale, take the short 15-minute drive to Tempe Market Place for attractive shops in an outdoor setting, great water features, an open fireplace plus great places to eat. Go at the weekend for the bonus of some live bands. Fish lovers should eat at Kings Fish House.

    • Top Tip 8

There are many ways to see the Grand Canyon but the best way is to take a rafting trip along the Colorado River. These are available from half days to almost two week trips.

    • Top Tip 9

Take an early morning hot air balloon ride. It's well worth the early start to experience it and don't worry about heights. As strange as it may seem, you don't have that same sensation of height as you get standing on a tall building.

    • Top Tip 10

In north-eastern Arizona, visit Canyon de Chelly (pronounced Shay) to see the spectacular red cliffs and some ancient Pueblo cliff dwellings that date back at least 700 years.

Today is a day of contrasts. Zion is noted for narrow canyons and colourful mesa scenery. Wind deep into the canyon and diverse geological features, from dramatic peaks and cliffs, odd geologic formations, desert oases featuring abundant pools to waterfalls and mighty canyons splashed with vivid colours. Depart Zion for a memorable journey across the vast, colourful vistas of the northeastern Mojave Desert. Although a contrast from the rest of the tour, Las Vegas is the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’. See the casinos and drive the length of the Las Vegas ‘Strip’. This evening you are invited to a farewell reception and dinner.
